Traditional model theoretic analysis of algebraic structures is only possible if the class of existentially closed ones admits a first-order description. However, with a slight change of perspective, the class of existentially closed models can be studied on its own. I will present a recent study (jointly with Jonathan Kirby) of exponential fields along these lines.
