Indigenous Identity and Urban Space
Indigenous space is a major issue in Canada and has been since Europeans began settlement of North American. For several hundred years, Europeans and other immigrants have been illegally occupying lands formerly inhabited by Indigenous peoples. What are the current issues that arise from this history and current context of colonialism when it comes to urban spaces in Canada? This presentation will share important issues related to Indigenous identity, well being, and urban space in Canada today, based on Dr. Stewart’s research with urban Indigenous youth. An objective of the presentation is to present Indigenous evidence-based knowledges to support Canadians in learning how to build ethical partnerships with Indigenous communities to improve urban spaces.
