Making Rural Farmers Smart
Rural India is changing rapidly with the spread of technology, communications and better transport infrastructure. However, more than 50% of the population are farmers, of which at least 80% are ‘poor’. This is the world’s largest population of farmers. We discuss how we address this problem by establishing agricultural cooperatives. But we modernize these cooperatives by enabling farmers to use technology, better farming methods and modern business practices. This includes food processing, value added food products, accessing and using funds more efficiently using technology, and innovative marketing methods to connect farmer coops to markets. One step beyond that is making farmers smart. The goal is to remove poverty, reduce inequality and build a sustainable community that eventually manages itself.
