Optimization has become an indispensable tool when planning for radiation therapy cancer treatment.  Yet, novel and ever more precise treatments such as IMPT pose significant challenges for planning, due to model’s complexities and uncertainties.  We discuss computational approaches for enforcing and approximating the so-called dose-volume constraints – a critical set of requirements used during the treatment planning to ensure the sufficient target coverage and healthy tissue sparring.
