SHORT ORALS - BREAKOUT ROOM 1 - Building Equity in Middle Years Numeracy Through Number Talks
In a partnership project between three Alberta school divisions and the University of Lethbridge, we examine the impact of Number Talks in middle school mathematics classrooms. The project goals are: (1) To increase student confidence and improve competency with numeracy; and (2) To promote equitable teaching practices that benefit the learning of Indigenous students, English Language Learners and students with learning difficulties. Number Talks were implemented by 30 teachers in grades 4–8 over a four-month period. Data includes teacher administered pre-tests and post-tests, as well as student and teacher interviews. This presentation will outline the motivation, the methodology and the initial findings of the research.
