Keynote Lecture: Leveraging Research on Learning Mathematics to Advance Student Learning Using Online Instructional Resources and Assessments
Research to improve student learning in undergraduate mathematics is producing insights about effective instructional supports and the processes of student acquiring essential reasoning abilities, mathematical understandings, and effective mathematical practices. Leveraging these insights to scaffold online instruction presents both opportunities and challenges.
In this talk I will describe how I and my research team leveraged research on learning key ideas of calculus and precalculus to create online curricula (including animations, applets, videos) and assessments that are producing significant gains in student learning. I will also address what we have learned about the challenges and affordances of scaling conceptually focused classroom and online mathematics curriculum and assessments in this 15-year research project.
