Abstract:
In an 1885 paper, Adolf Hurwitz used theta functions in conjunction with Hecke operators to develop certain "class number relations". In this talk, I will discuss his method and describe an application which counts elliptic curves over the rational numbers whose associated division fields have "as much Galois symmetry as possible".
