A Celebration of Women in Mathematics
Description
The Association for Women in Mathematics student chapter at York University invites you to enjoy a gallery presentation of achievements by women in mathematics. This event is offered in honour of Maryam Mirzakhani who was born on May 12. Mirzakhani received a Fields Medal (2014) for her work on the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces. In July 2017, the international mathematical community was shocked and saddened by the early passing of Maryam Mirzakhani, who died from cancer at age 40. She is considered one of the greatest mathematicians of her generation. To date, she is the only woman and the first Iranian to be honored with a Fields Medal.
This events has a three-part purpose, to honour Mirzakhani's memory, to honour the contributions of women who have been overlooked, and to recognize the bright future of women in Mathematics. There will be a short talk, followed by an event with a number of different artistic representations of contributions women have made in mathematics. The representations will include historical slide-shows, posters, simulations of current research and other mathematical objects associated with people's experiences in math. Light refreshments will be served.
