Student Night of the 2026 Fields Medal Symposium
Description
Student Night is an annual tradition during the Fields Medal Symposium. It gives students the opportunity to meet and interact with a Fields Medallist, with the aim of inspiring an appreciation of the beauty and scope of mathematics. The event is free of charge and open to high school and undergraduate students.
This year's honouree is Hugo Duminil-Copin (Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques and University of Geneva). He was awarded the Fields Medal in 2022 "for solving longstanding problems in the probabilistic theory of phase transitions in statistical physics, especially in dimensions three and four." His research explains how systems such as magnets and percolation networks can suddenly change their behaviour, and it has provided rigorous mathematical structure for questions that were long guided by intuition.
The evening will take the form of an informal talk and Q&A session. Students are encouraged to ask about his research, his path into mathematics and life as a working mathematician. There will also be pizza and a chance to meet other students who share an interest in mathematics.
Please note that registration for the Student Night is separate from the Fields Medal Symposium. This is an event for high school and undergraduate students; to register to attend in person or online, please visit: https://portal.fields.utoronto.ca/personal-portal/participation/3334 .
