The Fields Institute is proud to host an online screening of Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani. This one-hour documentary, Directed by George Csicsery, is a biographical film about the life and work of Maryam Mirzakhani, a brilliant mathematician who immigrated from Iran to the United States and went on to become the first woman and first Iranian to be awarded the illustrious Fields Medal before her untimely death at the age of 40.
In the film, the story of her life is presented alongside interviews with her colleagues and collaborators, with animated sequences that illuminate her exceptional insight and creativity.
Fields invites you to this virtual screening, which includes a “Watch Party” on Twitter, and an online panel discussion and audience Q&A.
The Q&A will feature

George Csicsery - Writer & Independent Filmmaker, Zala Films | George Csicsery is a writer and independent filmmaker, with much of his work focusing on mathematicians. In 2009 he received the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics Communications Award, for bringing mathematics to nonmathematical audiences.
Diana Davis - Visiting Assistant Professor, Swarthmore College | Diana Davis does research in dynamical systems, particularly in mathematical billiards and flat surfaces, and she has given over 100 talks in 22 states and 9 countries. She teaches innovative problem-centered, discussion-based math classes, and the video she made to explain her Ph.D. thesis using colors and dance "went viral" and won an international award. Outside of research and teaching, she enjoys long-distance running, recreational sailing, traveling, and thinking about how to build community and create a sustainable world.
