In this course, we will review and compare some basic techniques used in the resolution of singularities of analytic varieties and vector fields. We will show that these techniques can be explained in an unified framework, and potentially applied to the more general problem of resolution of singularities of differential operators of arbitrary order. As an illustration, we will apply them to resolve the singularities of arbitrary order linear differential operators on surfaces.
