Abstract:
Modular forms are certain complex functions with a rich history tracing back to the 1800s. “They satisfy so many internal symmetries that their mere existence seem like accidents. But they do exist.” said Mazur. In fact, “Modular forms are everywhere” per the title of Zagier’s recent birthday conference. In this talk we’ll discuss modular symmetry and certain variants which have been of interest in the last ~15 years. In particular, we’ll introduce the notion of quantum modular forms after Zagier, and discuss applications and connections to number theory, topology, combinatorics, and more.
