Abstract:
We will discuss, from a neurobiologist's perspective, one of the quintessential forms of propagating waves in neural media. Spreading depolarizations (also known as cortical spreading depression) are massive disturbances in ionic homeostasis that move very slowly (3mm/minute) across brain tissue. We will discuss their history and clinical relevance, as well as more recent work on mechanisms of propagation.
